“These are the apples the myth says he took away after killing the serpent with his club, that is to say, after overcoming the worthless and difficult argument inspired by his keen desire, using the club of philosophy while wearing noble purpose wrapped around him like a lion’s skin. Thus he took possession of the three apples, i.e., three virtues: to not grow angry, to not love money, and to not love pleasure.” -Herodorus (On Hercules)
And now for the twelfth labor; at long last the final labor of Hercules’s quest. For this labor, Hercules had to travel into the land of the dead to capture the three headed Hound of Hades, Cerberus. To prepare for his journey to the underworld he went to Eleusis to partake in the initiation of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The Mysteries had to do with Persephone being stolen away to the underworld by Hades. Demeter was Persephone’s mother and a deal was eventually struck to let Persephone come back to Demeter for two-thirds of the year with the rest of the time spent with Hades. That is why there is winter and fall in Greek mythology. After partaking in the Mysteries, Hercules entered the underworld with Athena and Hermes guiding his way. Hercules found two men trapped there named Theseus and Pirithous, imprisoned for trying to kidnap Persephone from Hades. Stone snakes coiled around their legs, holding them there.
Hades himself then appeared, inviting the two prisoners to a banquet along with Hercules. The lord of the dead set up chairs of forgetfulness, so when the two men sat down, they forgot who they were. Hercules rushed forward and pulled Theseus away, freeing him. When he went for Pirithous, the earth violently shook and prevented Hercules from saving him. Pirithous was the one who had the gall to have wanted Persephone all for himself, and his greed was too great to go unpunished. After the banquet, Hercules went to Hades and asked the god if he could have permission to bring Cerberus to the surface to complete his labor. Hades agreed, but only if Hercules would lay down his weapons and fight the hound with just his bare hands. Hercules was all too happy to comply. He battled valiantly with Cerberus, ignoring the biting serpents writhing out from the hound’s back. Fighting through the pain, Hercules got the gargantuan dog’s three heads in a mighty headlock. Cerberus’s razor-sharp teeth snapped at him, but at last the dog grew weak and relented. Hercules flung the dog over his back and carried him triumphantly to Eurystheus. The terrified king begged Hercules to return Cerberus back to the underworld, offering to end the labors at last. And thus, he finished his 12 labors and eventually, after many more feats and adventures, he ascended Mount Olympus and became a god. Some say he met a less than glorious fate after the labors, but without a doubt he eventually joined his father’s side in Olympus.
The day we get to the twelfth labor will be a glorious one for America, and nationalists worldwide.
